For the first week in this new month and new year, how about the aptly titled Captain January?
Captain January was based on the 1890 book by Laura E. Richards about a lighthouse keeper and his adopted daughter. It was first filmed in 1924, starring Baby Peggy, Hobert Bosworth, and Irene Rich. the silent film was directed by Edward F. Cline (The Paleface, Peck's Bad Boy, My Little Chickadee, The Bank Dick, Never Give a Sucker an Even Break) from a treatment by Eve Unsell and John Grey. In 1936 it was filmed as a muisical comedy-drama starring Shirley Temple, Guy Kibbee, Sara Haden,Slim Summerville, and Buddy Ebsen. It was directed by David Butler (The Little Colonel, Kentucky, By the Light of the Silvery Moon) from a screenplay by Sam Hellman, Gladys Lehman, and Harry Tugend. (In one scene with Ebsen near the water, the eight-year-old Temple was filmed without a top; complaints from a woman's organization led to the scene being reshot with Temple wearing a top,)
For the Lux Radio Theatre version, Shirley Temple reprised her role as the little girl, Star. Gene Lockhart played January, the lighthouse keeper.
Enjoy.
