Following my Friday Forgotten Book post yesterday about Will Eisner's John Law, I thought it would be fun to look at one of the Spirit Sunday sections for the Register and Tribune Syndicate, which included a comic book insert in their Sunday newspapers. This one, the very first Spirit Sunday section, is reprinted from the Washington Sunday Star -- please excuse the poor reproduction.
Here we see the origin of The Spirit, as Denny Colt falls into a vat of chemicals while pursuing Dr. Cobra and is thought dead. Actually, he is in a state of suspended animation, reviving after being entombed in the Wilkdwood Cemetery. This is when he decides to become The Spirit. The story was written and drawn by Eisner and and provided the foundation for the long-running series. (Note that in this first e;pisoded the Spririt did not don a mask.)
Next, we get a four-page story introducing Lady Luck, written by Eisner and drawn by Chuck Mazoujian, followed by a five-page introduction to Mr. Mystic, again written by Eisner but drawn by Bob Powell.
The Comic Book Plus website has links to most -- but not all -- of the Spirit Sunday sections from 1940 to 1952. Great stories, great artwork, and one of the truly great comic book heroes.
