Pierre Boileau (1906-1989) and "Thomas Narcejac" (Pierre Ayraud, 1908-1998), writing as Boileau-Narcejac, were helped create the sub-genre of French crime fiction, eventually penning 43 novels, 100 short stories, and four plays. Noted for their ingenious plots and creating atmospheres of disorientation and fear, they were masters of psychological suspense. Some of their best-known work was successfully filmed, notably as Les Diaboliques (1955) and Vertigo (1958 and 1996).
Their fourth published novel, Dantre les morts ("Among the Dead"), 1954, was translated as The Living and the Dead (1956) and, more notably, Vertigo (1958). It was adapted for BBC Radio 4 FM as Obsession by Michael Voysey and directed by Martin Jenkins.
"A man is terrified of heights, a woman is possessed by the sprit of her great-grandmother -- she kills herself by jumping from a church steeple, but is she really dead? The man becomes completely and tragically 'obsessed' with her 'ghost.' "
