RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE: THE PLAID OVERCOAT CASE (DECEMBER 28, 1951)

Dick Powell starred as Richard Diamond. the private eye whose adventures ran from April 29, 1949 to September 20, 1953. first on NBC Radio, then on ABC and CBS.  The show was created by Blake Edwards, who also wrote of directed many of the episodes.  Each program would start off with the theme song "Leave It to Love," which was whistled by Powell.  Most episodes ended with Diamond at the piano, singing a popular song to his girlfriend Helen Asher (Virginia Gregg) at her Park Avenue apartment.

Who is the guy in the plaid overcoat and why does he keep beating on Richard Diamond?  The answer to the first part of the question is easy:  the guy is Duke Crandall, who has just jumped bail on a blackmailing charge.  As to why he keeps beating up Diamond...well, you just have to listen to the episode.

Directed by Nat Wolfe and written by Dick Carr, with music by Frank Worth.  this episode also features Alan Reed, Herb Butterfield, Sidney Miller, Sandra Gould, and Sheldon Leonard.  Powell's closing song is "I Get Ideas."

Enjoy.
