NAOMI WISE REDUX

While preparing the last post, I came across this version of Naomi Wise, sung by Doc Watson.  Note that Doc's version is different from the one I posted earlier, and that Naomi's name has been shortened to Omie.

There are probably as many versions of this ballad as there are singers; Doc's version is true to its Appalachian roots.

  1. Jerry-Do you know how to post the piece from you tube right on here. If you go to a piece, you will see a prompt for embed. If you click it, a lot of symbols will come up. You can save them and then paste them right on your blog. That way the piece itself will appear. It took me a long time to figure this out.

  2. The only downsides are that it can cause your blog pages to load more slowly, as Patti discovered, and sometime the YT videos particualarly get pulled down. "Little Omie Wise" in this version. I like Watson's American version "Shady Grove" of what the British sing as "Matty Groves," as well, and was quite tiresome to my ex whenever we were in the central station of the DC Metro subway, and would be inspired to sing the Watson version by the Shady Grove signs (it's the terminus of one of the lines).

  3. And, of course, the "Little Omie Wise" (as it's usually credited) video has links to several recordings of "Shady Grove" and one of Watson doing one of the versions of "Matty Groves"...but I didn't discover that till after writing the above...Fairport Covention's "Matty Groves" was the first I heard.
