OUR OWN KU KLU KLAN (1921)

Can there actually be a humorous take on the Klan, portraying them as a helpful group for the little guy?  Looking back, the entire comic strip was a major misstep.  It' a given that the Klan was popular in 1921 when these cartoons appeared but that was true of many things now considered disgusting.  The classic pulp magazine Black Mask once issued a special "Ku Klux Klan issue," with stories both in favor or against the organization.  Noted science fiction and regional writer Manly Wade Wellman has praised the original Klan, while disparaging the group it had morphed into.

The three examples linked below are from the New York Evening Post and were drawn by Alfred Ablitzer ("Al Zere").  This was one of the most commented upon posts in the history of the Comic Book Plus web site -- be sure to read the comments at the bottom of the post; I particularly liked the one which read, "This is the kind of thing Fred Trump was reading when he was arrested at a Klan rally."

Note:  I had previous visited this strip on April 27, 2019.

And, just to get the bad taste out of your mouth, here's some political cartoons about the Klan from the 1920s:
