THE BIONIC WOMAN UPDATE

We made the trip to Annapolis yesterday to check on Kitty's progress two weeks after the last operation.  Cautious and mixed results are putting us into a holding pattern for the next few days.

Seems Kitty has developed an infection in the incision, so antibiotics have been prescribed.  Bloodwork and cultures have been taken.  Nothing to panic about, but still somewhat of a concern.

They also removed the staples, forty-four of them by my count.  I don't know if I had mentioned that the doctors had closed with staples rather than sutures.  Removing the staples was not painful actually, but was darned unomfortable.  (It didn't help that both Kitty and myself are squeamish.  Oh well.)  The incision is still draining and is healing slower than the doctors wish.

X-rays show a bone chip that hadn't been there before.  This could be a sign of something serious.  Or it could not.  No matter, we have to get the infection under control first.

Physical therapy has been put on hold while the doctor evaluates the situation.

We have another appointment with the surgeon on Friday and may have a better idea then of how Kitty is doing.  In the meantime, my bride is a tad nervous and anxious.  (She's Irish-American and was raised Catholic -- she tells me this explains why she can fixate on the worst possible outcomes.)  Of course, since the surgeon is concerned, we are also concerned.

Every so often I actually realize how wearing this episode has been on both of us, Kkitty far more than I.  I find myself doing a lot of busy work around the house, keeping my mind off of things.  Sooner or later (I'm sure) we will both get back to a regular schedule and even get a good night's sleep.

Please don't get the wrong idea.  I'm not really complaining.   These are merely bumps in the road to recovery.  Our problems are pretty minor and I'm sure things will work out fine.   Exhaustion and our lizard brains have been working against us this week.  There are a lot of great things happening in our lives right now and we will be focusing on those things while working to get Kitty up to snuff.  Recovery will just take a little bit longer than what we had originally hoped.

  1. Fingers crossed here, Jerry. My wife was raised Southern Baptist, and if you think Kitty can see the worst possible outcome, you don't know Judy.

    1. Thanks, Bill.

Hmm. Irish Catholic Guilt versus Southern Baptist Guilt? Kitty may challenge Judy to a duel.

    1. Thanks, Prashant. We know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but are just wondering how long that tunnel is. Despite all of these minor glitches, we can't help but have a wonderful new year as long as we're together.
