SUPER DETECTIVE LIBRARY #71: MYSTERY IN BAGHDAD (no date)

The British comic book Super Detective Library ran for 188 issues from 1953 to 1960.  It was first published by Amalgamated Press, then by Fleetway, and usually contained 68 pages, often with a single episode filling up the issue.  The stories were both based on books, with some originals, and often featured well-known characters such as the Saint, Bulldog Drummond, Harry Lime, as well as thrillers by edgar Wallace and E. Phillips Oppenheim.  Later in the series, original characters such as Rick Random and reprints of syndicated comic strips such as Buck Ryan and Rip Kirby filled most issues.  As can gathered by the title, most of the issues were devoted to some form of detective story; still a number of issues carried imaginative science fiction tales.

"Mystery in Baghdad" contains two stories about Baghdad policeman Chafik J. Chafik , a popular detective created by author "Charles B. Child" (C. Vernon Frost, 1903-1993) for Collier's Magazine.   Twenty-seven stories were published there from 1947 through 1956; an additional four original stories appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine from 1957 through 1969.  Fifteen of the Chafik short stories were published in book form as The Sleuth of Baghdad (Crippen & Landru, 2002).

Chafik J. Chafik appeared in four issues of Super Detective Library.  The two stories in "Mystery in Baghdad" are "The Little Shadow" (with artwork by Bill Lacey) and "A Ghost Walks in Baghdad" ( with artwork by Selby Donnison) appear to be original stories.

Enjoy.
