UNDERAPPRECIATED MUSIC (TWO DAYS LATE EDITION): IAN TYSON

Tyson, once one half of Sixties duo Ian & Sylvia, has been concentrating on country and cowboy music since 1980, something close to the heart of this former rodeo rider.  After Ian & Sylvia broke up, Tyson farmed and trained horses in Alberta, and soon bought his own cattle and horse ranch.  His signature song, "Four Strong Winds," was voted the greatest Canadian song of all time in 2005 by listeners of CBC Radio One.  Two of Tyson's songs -- "Navajo Rug" and "Summer Wages" -- were among the top 100 western songs as chosen by the Western Writers of America.

Among his honors are membership in the The Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Mariposa Hall of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  He has been inducted into the Order of Canada and  the Alberta Order of Excellence, and has received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Company, "Four Strong Winds" is one of the most influential songs in Canadian history.

In 2006, he suffered irreversible scarring of his vocal chords which left his voice "gravelly," but has nor stopped him from performing and recording.  He was nominated for the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award for Solo Artist of the Year.
