Among his honors are membership in the The Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Mariposa Hall of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has been inducted into the Order of Canada and the Alberta Order of Excellence, and has received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Company, "Four Strong Winds" is one of the most influential songs in Canadian history.
In 2006, he suffered irreversible scarring of his vocal chords which left his voice "gravelly," but has nor stopped him from performing and recording. He was nominated for the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award for Solo Artist of the Year.
