One of the most famous opera houses in the world turns 145 today, the place where Eric, Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, stalked. The Palais Garnier in Paris took fourteen years to build and is as much a symbol of Paris as the Louvre or Notre Dame Cathedral. Designed by architect Charles Garnier, for whom the opera house took its name (it was originally called "le nouvel opera de Paris"), is opulent space seats 1,979 and is primarily used for ballet; operas are now usually performed at the Opera Bastille, which opened in 1989.
