Big Joe Turner and His Blues Kings got the country shaking, rattling, and rolling back in 1954. When he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, the Hall called him "the brawny voiced 'Boss of the blues'." Was he ever!

Yeah, that was his tag back in the '50s, Boss of the Blues. One of my highschoolmates was a devoted fan of Springsteen, and when she heard that I, in 1981, referred to Turner as known as the BotB, she was quick to suggest that I should realize Bruce was the The Boss. I let her know I'd heard that before.
ReplyDeleteThe Atlantic ROCK AND ROLL album of Turner's was the only 1950s rock lp that had survived being swiped from my mother's teen-age collection by her younger sister, so I got to hear "Shake", "Flip, Flop and Flly", "Honey Hush" and more from a very young age. And bought her a Joe Turner '70s album on Pablo as a birthday gift...but that one was not so very much early rock so much as late blues with some jazz players in the mix.
