BITS & PIECES

Openers:  The light was so bad in the bar that everyone there looked like they had been painted by Thomas Hart Benton, or carved from dirty bars of soap with rusty spoons.

-- Howard Waldrop, "Do Ya, Do Ya, Wanna Dance?" (from Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, August 1988; nominated for both the 1989 SF Chronicle Award for novelette and the 1989 Nebula Award for Novelette; placed second for the 1989 Sturgeon Award for Best Short Story; placed third for the 1989 Hugo Award for Best Novelette; placed third for the 1989 Locus Award for Best Novelette; placed ninth for the 1989 Asimov's Reader's Award for Best Novelette)

Dayton, El Paso, and More:  Mass shootings are incidents involving victims of firearm related violence.  There is no broadly accepted definition of a mass shooting, so the figures below are the best I could find, but they can give you an idea of the breadth and seriousness of the problem.

That's a total of 253 mass shootings, folks.  252!

That's a total of 282 persons killed.  282!

That's a total of 1047 people wounded.  1047!

Keep in mind these numbers are fluid.  Persons on the wounded list may eventually be moved to the killed list.

Also keep in mind that "wounded" is a fluid term.  A wound may be minor or may be life-changing.  A wound may cripple, a wound may paralyze, a wound may necessitate an amputation, a wound may cause brain damage or permanent injury.

A number of the victims here are children.  Child or adult, the psychological damage for survivors may be devastating.

These numbers do not reflect the economic burdens that have been placed on victims and their families.

It is past time for reasonable action

It is past time for our legislators to grow some.

It is past time not only for reasonable, common sense gun regulations but for a concerted national effort to reduce some of the root causes of gun violence.  It will not be easy.  It will not happen overnight.  But when we, as a country, put of minds and efforts to a problem it can be solved.

Today's Post:  Each week when I do my Monday "Bits & Pieces" post, I have no idea what it will include.  I throw in things that get my attention at the moment, be it a bit of history, an update on Florida Man, or just something weird that catches my fancy.  I did not intend to post a diatribe on gun violence but, for the love of God, man!  Too much is too much!  Please don't just scan over the list of mass shooting in America since January 1st.  Read each line and try to connect with the human beings dead or injured in each incident and try to grasp the enormity of the problem.  I realize that, for the most part, this is just preaching to the choir, but I hope that this may spur you to talk and to consider what should be done.  Next week, I'll be my snarky old self again.  Promise.
