I have enjoyed the Alexander Kent novels I've read, though that one doesn't sound familiar. I don't consider any of the Pern novels with Todd McCaffrey's name on them as canon. He just isn't the writer his mother was. I'm a big fan of Niven and Pournelle, though Footfall may not be their best you hold enjoy it. In A Dry Season is a good Banks novel.
