I suspect a daughter's testimony, while perhaps more valuable than a son's in this regard, is still colored more by sentiment than by measured analysis. (Somewhat similarly, the Cheney clan seem less homophobic than most reactionaries, but would you want one running the country for eight years?)Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-4586562578105586812013-07-02T13:28:50.264-07:002013-07-02T13:28:50.264-07:00There's a lot of good stuff in Wylie's out...There's a lot of good stuff in Wylie's output, Patti -- and a lot of less good but still interesting stuff.Jerry Househttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482856733981933159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-50255765749234569012013-07-02T13:26:56.303-07:002013-07-02T13:26:56.303-07:00And that is one of the great things about these Ov...And that is one of the great things about these Overlooked movies, John.Jerry Househttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482856733981933159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-59226191228954885242013-07-02T13:25:30.913-07:002013-07-02T13:25:30.913-07:00Wylie's daughter vehemently denied he was miso...Wylie's daughter vehemently denied he was misogynistic, although THE DISAPPEARANCE and other works make a case otherwise. Could it be he was just writing to provoke?

Cartmill's contribution to Hoover's paranoia was, in essence, pretty boring and near the bottom of his works, IMHO. Wylie's work was certainly read more by his contemporaries.Jerry Househttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482856733981933159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-32148288773604590252013-07-02T11:31:39.981-07:002013-07-02T11:31:39.981-07:00I watched MURDERS IN THE ZOO a couple of months ag...I watched MURDERS IN THE ZOO a couple of months ago. How did any of the actors keep a straight face while making that movie?

Another Wylie book worth mentioning is his very good impossible crime detective novel CORPSES AT INDIAN STONES, reviewed here. It incorporates several of his ealrier themes especially those found in GLADIATOR and THE SAVAGE GENTLEMAN.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-81427281851742284742013-07-02T07:58:51.511-07:002013-07-02T07:58:51.511-07:00My father had fond memories of the Wylie "Cru...My father had fond memories of the Wylie "Crunch and Des" stories, so I was happy to present him with the collected stories in a single volume some years back.

Not one of our less-misogynist thinkers, as THE DISAPPEARANCE helped demonstrate for me early on.

Of course, much moreso than Cartmill or JWC, Wylie was already a big deal, and probably was seen by Hoover or whomever as more of a potential "threat" for publicizing his being bullied/investigated...Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2728909293998777391.post-78977101783783766182013-07-02T07:46:20.083-07:002013-07-02T07:46:20.083-07:00A Generation of Vipers had a great impact on me.
